Las Vegas Raiders: 5 surprises from the first unofficial 2021 depth chart

Rookie to start at safety alongside Johnathan Abram?

This one is a surprise for one reason only, and it is because Tre’Von Moehrig is a rookie. With that aside, he is one of the most talented and NFL-ready players the Raiders have drafted in years, as the team traded up in the second round to snag the former Thorpe award winner out of TCU.

The move was seen as a significant steal for the Raiders, and many felt Moehrig should have been selected over first-round pick, offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood. But that is neither here nor there, as the do-it-all safety looks to be a home-run pick for the Raiders.

He has already shown his elite skills to cover and deliver big hits throughout training camp, and he has gotten praise from even quarterback Derek Carr. The biggest surprise here should not be Moehrig starting, but that he would even have a chance to lose his starting position.
