Las Vegas Raiders: 5 things to watch for against San Francisco
Nate Hobbs adding to his preseason highlight reel
The undisputed star of the preseason so far for the Raiders has been rookie cornerback Nate Hobbs. The former fifth-round pick has made a name for himself with some highlight-reel plays and could be cementing his place as the starting nickel corner in week one with his excellent level of play.
Presumptive starter Nevin Lawson is suspended for week one and that has opened the door for Hobbs to take the job temporarily and perhaps even permanently. He has shown tremendous awareness in coverage and has flashed as both a blitzer and tackler.
His sack of Geno Smith in Week 1 was the highlight of the game and he followed that up with a tackle for loss and a deep interception against the Rams.
Hobbs has a nice combination of size and speed and he has shown a willingness and ability to be physical against the run and make plays in coverage. The Raiders may choose to sit Hobbs this week if they believe he has done enough to win the job, but the hope is that we get to see him make some more big plays against San Francisco and continue building on his strong momentum going into the season.
