Las Vegas Raiders vs Miami Dolphins: 2021 Week 3 Offensive Grades
Offensive Line
The Dolphins forced themselves onto the Raiders offensive line Sunday, three sacks were credited to this defense, and they were pressuring Derek Carr a lot more than they should have been, which was unexpected. It is true, the Raiders offensive line is a hodgepodge of practice squad players and backups at this point, due to injuries.
They were serviceable for most of the game, but the glaring holes at some of the positions on the offensive line were more than apparent Sunday. Rookie offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood played as such, a rookie who is still going through the growing pains. And will have to learn quickly if the Raiders can continue on their early success.
The guard play overall was solid, but not spectacular, but the biggest issue is and has been the center position. Former undrafted center Andre James has looked out of his element, as he steps into a starting position many wondered he had not earned. With basically hardly any playing time to his name, the Raiders not only named him the starter early into the offseason, but awarded the 24-year-old center with a three-year contract.
His continued struggles were on full display Sunday.
Botched snaps and being dominated by the opposing defensive tackles became a regularity throughout the contest. Carr being highly aware of the positioning of the defense, used a quick release to overcome the struggles of his offensive line. The line must do better, and will have to do better if the Raiders can continue to stay atop the division.
