They say one thing you should never do is pay running backs, as they come a dime a dozen. But the Raiders took the cake in this one, they did not just pay a running back, but they paid a backup running back.
When Drake was brought in this season, he was slated immediately as the backup running back, as the Raiders already have a starter in Pro Bowl back Josh Jacobs. Instead of spending money elsewhere on bigger needs, the Raiders invested a two-year,$14 million contract into the legs of Drake.
The move was met with much skepticism, as head coach Gruden and the franchise hyped up Drake as a “jack of all trades” and multi-purpose back that would give the Raiders a true one-two punch at the running back position. However, through five games, what the Raiders have gotten is very little in terms of productive play from the back.
He has rushed 24 times for a mere 57 yards, just a shade over 2 yards a carry per game. He has been a bit better receiving with 138 receiving yards, but this is also pitiful and really makes the price tag look even worse. He could be on the move if the Raiders continue to decline, and rightfully so.
