There is no doubt that Derek Carr will be the team’s quarterback in 2022, and it is very likely he is going to get a sizeable extension this offseason. However, when it comes to who will back up Carr in 2022 and beyond, that remains to be seen, as there is no way they bring Marcus Mariota back on another big-money deal.

Mariota has been a gadget player during his time in the Silver and Black and is likely going to get a shot to start with another franchise next season. That means the Raiders have to figure out the backup spot in 2022, and the hope is that they will move on from Nathan Peterman, and maybe draft the spot.

In the fifth round, the Raiders use one of their two picks to add Phil Jurkovec, a standout quarterback for Boston College. Jurkovec was once a highly-touted prospect at Notre Dame and has done some nice work with the Eagles, so bringing him in as a draft pick would save the Raiders money, and give them a nice, young option at the position.
