Las Vegas Raiders vs Washington 2021 Week 13: Studs and Duds
Studs – Denzel Perryman and the Defense
The Raiders defense has struggled recently with poor performances against Kansas City and Dallas with a solid performance until fatigue set in against Cincinnati. They bounced back in a big way against Washington where they held them to 17 points, forced a turnover, and should have had 2 others on dropped interceptions.
They more than did their part as they kept Washington out of the end zone for an extended time after the first drive and gave the offense plenty of chances to take control of the game which they failed to do. Yannick Ngakoue and Maxx Crosby were all over the Washington backfield and the defensive backs held up well in coverage and they did enough for the Raiders to win the game.
Even the struggling run defense held up well as they gave up 88 yards to Antonio Gibson but it took him 23 carries to get there. A big reason for that was Denzel Perryman who was all over the field with 12 tackles including a massive tackle for loss on a run play.
He has been the tone-setter on defense with his physicality and the unit suffered when he went out with an injury. Hopefully this will not be a long term injury as the Raiders can ill afford to lose him at this point.
This defense has not been great but has been good enough on a number of occasions where a better offensive performance could have won the game. They held off Cincinnati until the 4th quarter, kept Chicago at bay for long periods, and did more than enough against Washington but the offense could not capitalize.
More turnovers would be nice but the blame for Sunday’s loss can’t be laid at the feet of the defense with the exception of the potential game-winning interception dropped by Trevon Moehrig.
