Las Vegas Raiders at Indianapolis Colts: 3 Raiders to watch in Week 17

Solomon Thomas/Darius Philon

Solomon Thomas came to the Raiders this offseason after not really working out in San Francisco after being drafted in the top five of his draft. The Raiders and 49ers essentially swapped defensive tackles after the Raiders signed Thomas, and the Niners signed not only Maurice Hurst but Arden Key as well.

Thomas has had a career resurgence so far in Las Vegas, having a career high so far in sacks, tackle for losses, and forced fumbles despite not starting any games so far. That might change with Darius Philon being put on the reserve COVID list this past Monday, and if Philon cannot play due to feeling any symptoms on Sunday, then the Las Vegas defense is going to need that force up the middle to not only stop Johnathan Taylor, but also hopefully force Carson Wentz into some bad throws.

If Philon can return to the lineup on Sunday, that’s even better for the defense, as Philon was essential in shutting down Denver’s dangerous running attack limiting running backs Melvin Gordon and rookie Javonte Williams to just eight total rushing yards. The defense is going to need another performance like that to have any chance of winning this game.
