Raiders need to commit to Derek Carr long-term or move on
Raiders need to commit to Derek Carr long-term or move on
So, What’s Going to Happen?
Now that we got both scenarios out of the way, let’s talk about which one is the better move and why. Realistically, it makes the most sense to retain Carr and extend him. There are no rookie quarterbacks in this draft that seem talented enough to be a franchise quarterback, which is ideally what you would want when you draft a quarterback.
Also, there is no guarantee that one of the top QBs will be available when Las Vegas is finally on the clock. So, replacing Carr with a drafted quarterback doesn’t seem like a great plan.
Also, as mentioned earlier, Carr will still be cheaper than any other quarterback that Las Vegas could potentially bring in via trade, as those quarterbacks would require new contracts upon arrival. Likely, Carr will cost about as much as Matt Ryan, meaning he’ll be worth more than he is now, but he’ll lie just outside of the top five highest quarterback contracts in the league.
Carr is a talented quarterback and a great leader capable of leading a team to the playoffs even when facing insurmountable odds. The role he plays in the locker room during this time of transition will be crucial if Las Vegas hopes to carry over their success from this season to the next.
And if they can add a top receiver, improve the offensive line, and find red zone success with a new offensive coordinator, then Carr can lead the Las Vegas Raiders on a deep playoff run in 2022.
