Where does Raiders Derek Carr land in our complete AFC QB rankings?
Few have fallen from grace quicker than the former number one overall pick. A Heisman trophy winner at the University of Oklahoma, Baker Mayfield looked well on his way to superstardom in the NFL after his rookie season. Instead, it has just been a slow descent. Similar to Tua Tagovailoa, Baker Mayfield isn’t always bad but the Browns rarely, if ever, will win because of him. Something is just missing.
That something is often just any sort of creativity outside of the structure of Kevin Stefanski’s offense. While the play-caller does a good job of making things easier for Mayfield, sometimes he needs his QB to help him out as well.
To this point, it just hasn’t happened. In 2021, Baker Mayfield recorded the lowest yardage output of his career with 3,010 and the fewest touchdown passes of his career with seventeen.
Baker Mayfield has settled firmly into average quarterback territory. He is good enough to make a fanbase believe and be a part of a team that wins, but it will always be frustrating hoping he ever takes a step forward. With a decision on a contract extension looming, Baker Mayfield will be a very interesting discussion around the NFL in the 2022 season.
