Raiders: Placing an early grade on the hire of Josh McDaniels
NE coordinators to HC role
I did touch on how Patriots coordinators turned head coaches have fared very badly, and it does signify the power and control that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has on the franchise and play-calling. However, McDaniels has been something of a beacon of change within the Patriots franchise.
Belichick is more of a defensive guru and has the final say on play-calling in this department. However, he relinquishes play-calling to his offensive coaches, and with McDaniels being the offensive coordinator for the franchise since 2012, the Patriots have won three championships under his offensive supervision.
So we have basically a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde case here. A former failed head coach turned successful offensive guru is now at the helm. Considering he was a young upstart and not prepared in his first tenure as head coach, which he has admitted himself, maybe the maturity and continued success in New England will have this Josh McDaniels as a new man and head coach.
It is hard to truly call this as we do not have a crystal ball here, but the hire is solid, maybe not spectacular considering the success rate of former Patriots coordinators. However, with his pedigree as a winning offensive guru with a vast knowledge and success rate with quarterbacks, maybe he can be the head coach Derek Carr always needed but did not know he wanted.
