Raiders: Placing an early grade on the hire of Josh McDaniels

Early thoughts

In his introductory speech as the new head of the Raiders franchise, McDaniels at 45-years-old today, was quick to point out his failure as a first-time head coach in Denver. “When I went to Denver, I knew a little bit of football, I didn’t really know people,” said McDaniels at the press conference.

Has the coach matured? It is hard to truly say, although there has to be some sort of growth and patience of a person within 12 years. Although we do not know how much success and growth McDaniels is capable of. After only one uneventful stint as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, he returned to New England as offensive coordinator, a position he held before his Denver hiring.

Although he has had a huge chunk of success in New England with multiple Super Bowl rings, the success rate of New England coordinators as head coaches has been abysmal, and this is including his own 11-17 stint.
