Analyzing the Raiders Quarterback situation entering the 2022 offseason

Mariota and Peterman

The future of Mariota and Peterman is likely already decided. Peterman especially was a known favorite of former head coach Jon Gruden and it’s increasingly likely he may even fall out of the league. Mariota offers a bit more simply because of his experience and the role he played for the team this season.

Mariota likely wants a chance to compete for a starting role based on his past and pedigree. However, if no opportunity materializes, McDaniels can bring him back if he sees his package as an interesting wrinkle for a new offense.

The Raiders may enter offseason workouts with none of these quarterbacks on the roster. Carr is the most likely to return and if he does, he will likely have a new backup or two. McDaniels and Ziegler come from the Patriots tree of drafting a new quarterback every season and could look to add a developmental rookie as well as a veteran that knows McDaniels’ system.
