Las Vegas Raiders 2022 Draft Profile: Nevada QB Carson Strong
Does drafting Strong make sense?
Mock drafts have Strong going anywhere from late in the first round to early third round. The truth is, no one really knows what these quarterback-needy teams are going to do when it comes to the top three quarterback prospects in this draft class.
Do they reach in the first just to get their guy? Or do they draft the best player available until the value of the pick matches the player? So, if the Raiders do decide to take that chance with Strong, already knowing about Derek Carr’s future, I believe they would have to pick him with their second-round pick, and I for one would be 100% down with that.
Strong has a really good chance to be a good quarterback in this league, especially with a coach like McDaniels by his side, and who knows, maybe at worst he can fetch the Raiders a first or second-round pick in two years. That is what the Patriots did with Jimmy Garoppolo in New England, and if the team commits to Carr long-term, having a legitimate backup will prove large for the franchise moving forward.
The likelihood of the Raiders going quarterback in the first two days of this draft are slim based on the fact McDaniels is in a win-now mode going into his second stint as an NFL head coach. Strong could help down the road, but for 2022, McDaniels is going to look to stack his roster for a playoff run.
