2022 NFL draft (with Chark) under year 1 of the Las Vegas Raiders new regime.
In 2019, the final year Oakland Raiders selected safety Johnathan Abram with one of their three first round picks. Today, Abram still holds the starting job, but has extreme issues with coverage.
Virginia’s Nick Grant not only started off as a receiver, but has spent a lot of time at corner for the Cavaliers.
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here; The chances Nick Grant comes and threatens Abram for his job are slim to none, however, Grant offers a lot on passing downs that Abram simply does not.
In addition to his ball skills, the 6′ safety also maintains that physical presence Abram brings, albeit not to the same extent. He understands run gaps well, but as a struggling tackler he isn’t the most efficient against the run.
Beyond the safety position, he also offers a lot to the special teams unit.
Overall, Grant doesn’t offer a skillset that will change a defense, but he brings in a presence in the passing game which the strong safety rotation lacks, while maintaining some presence against the run.
Don’t expect him to come in and light the NFL on fire, but you can still expect him to hold down what’s currently a liability for the silver and black.
