More linebacker options that make sense for the Raiders
Although more depth certainly makes sense, it no longer is a priority, only something the front office shouldn’t close the door on. With that being the case, there’s no need for the Raiders to spend too big of money on another linebacker. Inexpensive moves are going to be the focus here.
The most likely option, and probably something that’s in play for Las Vegas, is grabbing a linebacker in the draft with one of the back-to-back fifths, or the sixth-round pick the Raiders have. There should be several great depth pieces available in this range, with my favorite potential option being Wisconsin’s Jack Sanborn, and D’Marco Jackson being a great fallback pick.
What makes a move like this so realistic is the Raiders have already checked several boxes across the roster, from starting talent down to depth. Originally, I had Vegas drafting a third-down running-back with one of these late picks, but even that has been addressed. Assuming an offensive lineman and defensive tackle get picked in rounds three and four, the rest is fair game.
Linebacker is very deep in this draft, so it makes sense good talent will be there, even as late as the fifth-round. However, if the Raiders decide to try their hand at a different approach, there’s also some free agents left that make sense.
Former Raider and podcaster Will Compton is available, and likely won’t cost anything. Compton is already a fan favorite, partly due to his love for the organization, and the other part being he’s a great radio personality. Earlier in the off-season, the linebacker even tweeted at the Raiders, asking if they needed a linebacker for a low price. Compton is ready to put on a Raider helmet for the third time in five years.
Dont’a Hightower’s market is on the small side and is an option both Ziegler and McDaniels are very familiar with. Hightower wouldn’t just be a depth piece, but he would be a leader in the locker room and mentor to Deablo.
