3 reasons why the Raiders will be Super Bowl contenders in 2022

Getting Better Up Front

If there is one other big thing the Las Vegas Raiders did this offseason, it’s getting better upfront. The team parted ways with Yannick Ngokue, instead opting to sign Chandler Jones. He’ll be paired with Maxx Crosby, who recently signed a contract extension after leading the league in QB pressures in the 2021 season.

They’ll be an absolute force when it comes to passing downs, as both have tremendous speed and strength that allows them to get to the quarterback. The team also signed Kyler Fackrell, a pass-rushing linebacker, and is bringing back developing pass rusher Malcolm Koonce. Both should be good rotational pieces on passing downs.

The team also gained more size in the middle of the line by adding Bilal Nichols, Vernon Butler, and Kyle Peko, all of whom are over 300 pounds. These signings should drastically improve Las Vegas’ rushing defense, which often struggled last season. These three also seem to be scheme fits for the Patrick Graham defense, which uses multiple down linemen and nose tackles.

Having this combo of pass rushers and run stuffers should greatly benefit the defense helmed by Patrick Graham. Really, defensive success starts with the defensive line. If the line stuffs the run, then linebackers will have an easier time picking up the open gap.

If the defensive line is constantly harassing the quarterback, then the secondary will have to cover for a shorter period. So, as long as the line plays well, then the Las Vegas team can make a push for the Super Bowl.
