Las Vegas Raiders complete QB room behind Derek Carr

While the Raiders have been aggressive in adding talent this off-season on both sides of the ball. One of the biggest weaknesses left however appeared to be a backup quarterback. On Friday, they appeared to fill this need.
In 2021, the Las Vegas Raiders had one of the league’s most dynamic quarterback rooms. Of course, starting quarterback Derek Carr once again led the teams’ passing attack. However, behind him was former Oregon star Marcus Mariota. Most known for his game-changing running ability, Mariota was used in this way often last season.
Despite the creative usage, Mariota signed with the Atlanta Falcons in the off-season for a chance to be a starting quarterback once again. With Nathan Peterman gone as well, Las Vegas was left with just Carr on the roster.

As such, Las Vegas added former 49ers and Browns quarterback Nick Mullens. Coincidentally, the Raiders have had some very memorable meetings with Mullens in the past. In fact, the first start of his career came against the Raiders on Thursday Night Football. A total unknown at the time, Mullens shredded the Raiders’ defense for 262 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 34-3 win.
Mullens would meet Las Vegas again in 2021 while with the Cleveland Browns. This time, the stakes were much bigger. Thurst into action while the Browns were dealing with massive Covid issues, Mullens would be facing a Raiders team that needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
While Vegas would eventually earn the win, Mullens was serviceable in a tight spot with 147 yards passing and a touchdown.
Las Vegas also added journeyman quarterback Garrett Gilbert. Most recently with Washington, he has spent time in Carolina, Cleveland, and Dallas as well. He has two starts in his career and a 1:1 TD: INT ratio.
Of course, Derek Carr missing time would be catastrophic for the Raiders. Despite his polarizing nature, he is the unquestioned leader of the offense. However, if he were to be forced out of action, Las Vegas has two passers who have starting experience in the NFL with Mullens and Gilbert. In a pinch, Vegas could rely on Mullens to help keep them in games which is, of course, very valuable.
