Who’s next for the Raiders following Derek Carr’s extension?

The Raiders extending either Hunter Renfrow or Josh Jacobs is more than a likelihood now

At some point, the Raiders will have some tough decisions to make. Yes, Carr took a team-friendly deal to help the roster, but it’s nearly impossible for most teams to keep their core group together for more than a few seasons. Hunter Renfrow was the team’s de-facto number one receiver last year and has been one of Carr’s favorite receivers since his arrival.

On the other hand, fans were reminded of what Josh Jacobs was capable of late last season.

Can the Raiders retain Waller, Renfrow, and Waller beyond 2022? It’s not impossible. Will the Raiders do it? That’s an entirely different question. Be that as it may, Carr made it known that his extension will be structured so that team does exactly that.

Renfrow clinched a Pro Bowl berth last year, but more importantly, with the arrival of McDaniels and playing alongside Davante Adams, the former Clemson product could be in store for a special 2022 season.

Unfortunately, Jacobs has struggled to stay healthy. Much of it can be attributed to his punishing and physical style. No one can question Jacobs’ toughness, but being reliable is the best policy, and despite carrying much of the Raiders’ offense into the playoffs, he could be the odd man out. Running back is one of the most expendable positions in the NFL, and the Raiders will need to figure out if a lucrative fifth option for Jacobs is warranted.
