Raiders: 3 reasons the Derek Carr contract extension makes sense
1. He is the best option available, by far
In the past, the Raiders have been rumored to move on from Carr several times. Whether it is to move up in the draft or acquire a veteran, there has always been a player available that gave them a reason to think it was worth it. From Kyler Murray to Tom Brady, the Silver and Black have been connected to everybody.
If the Raiders were to move on from Carr now, however, the options are few and uninspiring. Currently, the best options are available via trade in the form of Jimmy Garoppollo and Baker Mayfield. Both solid but unspectacular quarterbacks, neither brings as much to the table as Carr does.
Looking to free agency and the draft, the options are nearly non-existent. In fact, the 2021 QB class is so barren that most teams in need of a quarterback have decided to address it in other ways. Washington traded for Carson Wentz, New Orleans re-signed Jameis Winston and the Steelers signed Mitch Trubisky. All of those quarterbacks are worse than Derek Carr is right now, even if players like Malik Willis have immense potential.
