Raiders QB Derek Carr on winning a playoff game, the AFC West, and more
Raiders QB Derek Carr on the upcoming AFC West Battles: “Yeah, it’s unbelievable.”
Raiders fans were getting anxious as the AFC West began loading up as soon as free agency got underway. Nevertheless, Ziegler has proven to be just as smart, if not smarter, than any of the general managers within his division.
While the Los Angeles Chargers acquired Khalil Mack and J.C. Jackson, the Raiders made sure to counter with Adams and Jones. The Denver Broncos landed Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson, but Las Vegas added to their secondary with Ya-Sin. Essentially, Ziegler has countered what the Raiders’ divisional rivals did this offseason. Coming to terms with Carr is just his latest move.
All the same, No. 4 is aware of how tough the West is going to be in 2022 and didn’t mince words, as the signal-caller will have to deal with all of this until he’s nearly 35.
"“Yeah, it’s unbelievable. Pat [Mahomes] is great. Justin [Herbert], he’s just starting and he’s going to be a great player for a long time. Russell [Wilson] has been great. It’s exciting to go and compete against these guys. We’ve all had battles, we’ve all kind of had shootouts, so to speak, against each other. They’ve won some and we’ve won some. So, it’s going to be tight."
Patrick Mahomes lost arguably his best wideout in Tyreek Hill this offseason, but as Raiders fans know, the West still goes through Kansas City until it doesn’t. The Denver Broncos have had one of the most consistently solid defenses in the past few years, but their offense regularly falls short. Russell Wilson will have some solid receiving options, but as Vic Fangio learned, if you can’t beat the Raiders, does it matter?
"“It’s going to be hard. And it’s going to come down to who does everything right, who does all the little things right, who’s closer together, who’s tighter of a unit, and things like that.”"
Saying it’s going to be hard might be an understatement right now, but Carr is right; whoever has the tightest and closest group could emerge as the victor. Considering what the team went through last year, you’d be hard-pressed to find a team with more comradery than this Raiders team.
