Clelin Ferrell

Just like I mentioned about Johnathan Abram in the previous slide, Clelin Ferrell was also one of the three first-round picks taken in the 2019 NFL Draft. The hope was that they would be key in turning around this defense, but unfortunately, based on him being the No. 4 overall pick, he has been a bust.

Throughout his NFL career so far Ferrell has struggled with registering sacks and quarterback pressure production along with injuries his first two seasons.  In this new defense, Clelin will be starting off with a clean slate and playing mostly in the inside to help provide some kind of push as the Raiders have mostly added big bodies at the defensive tackle position.

Every year since his rookie year Ferrell’s snap count has gone done. In 2019, he was on the field for 648 defensive snaps, 461 in 2020, and only 261 last season where he produced one and a half sacks and 14 total tackles. Ferrell’s fifth-year option will for sure not be picked up when the time for that comes, but if he proves more useful in this system and position than he was under Gus Bradley then maybe he can stay with the team into the future anyway.
