3 Big moves the Las Vegas Raiders can still make

Sign Tyrann Mathieu

As mentioned, Chandler Jones has helped to legitimize the Raiders’ defense. However, the back end of the defense could still use some work. While Trevon Moehrig was phenomenal as a rookie, former first-round pick Jonathan Abram has been a train wreck so far in his career. A total liability in coverage, his ineffectiveness continuously plagues the Las Vegas defense.

Luckily for them, one of the league’s premier safeties is still available in free agency. Of course, this would be former Kansas City Chief, Tyrann Mathieu. After winning a Super Bowl with the Chiefs, they decided to go in another direction leaving the 29-year-old without a job.

Despite this, he is still an effective player. With a 67.3 grade from PFF, he graded out fairly well while recording three interceptions and six passes defended. For new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, he is sure to love Mathieu’s versatility as he can play single-high, in the box, or in the slot.

Perhaps more importantly, Mathieu joining the Raiders would pry him away from the arch-rival Chiefs, hurting them in the process. He also may be able to give Las Vegas some valuable intel the next time the two match up.
