Raiders: Question for each defensive position group entering the 2022 summer

Safety: Is this the end for Johnathan Abram?

Another 2019 Raiders draft pick is entering a crucial season for himself, not only with the franchise but for his NFL career in general. With a new defensive coordinator at the helm, the hope is that Patrick Graham can get the most out of Johnathan Abram, who is talented, but very inconsistent.

Abram has all the physical gifts you would hope for in a safety, which is why the Raiders selected him in the first round a few years back. The problem for Abram has been for every big play he makes, he completely loses his technique the next time, leading to big-play opportunities for the opponent.

If the Raiders are to compete in the AFC West, they have to get good play from their secondary, as they will be facing Russell Wilson, Justin Herbert, and Patrick Mahomes twice a season within divisional play. Abram will be key if they are going to be able to stop what should be electric passing attacks, and if he can’t, his time with the Silver and Black is likely over.
