Raiders: What to expect in Year 2 for the 2021 NFL Draft picks

Tyree Gillespie

The Las Vegas Raiders made it a point to go after the safety position during the 2021 NFL Draft, trading up for Tre’Von Moehrig in the second round. Later on, the Silver and Black went with Missouri safety Tyree Gillespie, once again trading up into the fourth round to bolster this position group.

As a rookie, Gillespie did not play much, as he had a stint on injured reserve, and was mostly used on special teams, and as a depth safety. In 2022, the feeling is that he will play the same role, but an injury to either Moehrig or Abram would likely propel him into a starting role, as he has the talent to succeed at the NFL level.

For the Raiders, safety could be an issue, as we still do not know what we are going to get from Johnathan Abram every week. Gillespie is a kid who comes to practice every day and brings it, and with his size, staying healthy could net him significant playing time if Abram falters in 2022.

Projection: Depth Safety
