Raiders: Why Derek Carr will silence his critics in 2022

The new offense should be perfect for him

Once again, Derek Carr is in a new system under a new head coach, new offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach. The new head coach just happens to be one of the best offensive minds in the game today, Josh McDaniels, from the New England Patriots.

We all know McDaniels was a vital part of the career of Tom Brady and Mac Jones. Well, that is not the reason why Carr will be next in line.

While in New England, Mcdaniels’ offenses finished in the top-10 in total offense eight times. One of the main reasons is that his system was predicated on balance. Last season in New England, the Pats passed the ball 535 times while running the ball 489 times.

Expect McDaniels to bring that style to Vegas with the playmakers he will inherit.

Having a balanced attack will benefit Carr a great deal allowing him to read the defense better. When you can read a defense like a book, you keep them on their heels and can get the ball to several playmakers that Carr will have at his disposal, like slot receiver Hunter Renfrow, WR1 Davante Adams, and tight end Darren Waller, who McDaniels has produced ballers at these respective positions.

As far as running the ball, Carr can lean on a dominant 1-2 punch like McDaniels used before in New England with success. Running the ball with Josh Jacobs leading the way followed by Kenyon Drake, Zamir White, and Brandon Bolden could have several benefits for Carr.

For example, a strong run game could loosen up the defense and keep them on their heels. As a result, Carr can read a defense better and exploit their weakest links with some pass plays. Not to mention utilize play-action which they are anticipated to run quite a bit this season.
