Chargers bolster the defense
The Chargers then made the biggest splash of the free agency tampering period, agreeing to sign with the No. 1 corner on the market in Patriots J.C. Jackson, beating out other teams that unfortunately included the Raiders. The Chargers signed Jackson to a relatively cheap deal in contrast to what people around the league thought, too.
Jackson signed a five-year $82 million deal with $40 million guaranteed. Jackson joins standout rookie Asante Samuel Jr and Derwin James, Nasir Adderley, and Bryce Callahan to make the Chargers’ secondary not only one of the more formidable ones in the division but in the entire NFL.
The Chargers also brought in Defensive Tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day from the Los Angeles Rams to continue to try to improve their league-worst run defense. Joseph-Day does not provide much in terms of pass rush, but Joseph-Day is an underrated run defender and should help the Chargers in that department.
A couple other notable defensive players brought in for the Chargers was the aforementioned Bryce Callahan coming over from the Denver Broncos where he spent the last two years. Callahan will try to bounce back from a down year with the Broncos in which he only started six games after starting 10 the previous year and getting no interceptions and only 29 combined tackles.
The Chargers signed versatile linebacker Kyle Van Noy after he spent last season with the New England Patriots. Van Noy is a smart veteran linebacker who can provide the Los Angeles Chargers some solid depth.
