Safety

Recently, we put together a piece on how the Raiders secondary should be better than expected, this after coming in at No. 29 overall in a ranking by Pro Football Focus. The team did a great job getting better at cornerback, an area of need for years now, and the depth they brought in at safety is strong too.

However, looking at the starting lineup, Johnathan Abram is penciled in to start alongside Tre’Von Moehrig and entering Year 4, which is a major question mark. Sure, Duron Harmon could step up and start, as could be the case for Tyree Gillespie heading into Year 2, but playing in this division, will that really be enough?

The Raiders will battle it out against Justin Herbert, Russell Wilson, and Patrick Mahomes just in the AFC West alone, which begs the question of whether or not they have done enough at safety to stop those guys. In reality, Moehrig is an excellent player, but outside of him, who are you really comfortable in a big spot back there?
