Raiders’ new CB Anthony Averett welcomes the challenge of Davante Adams

Projected starting cornerback Trayvon Mullen remains on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but the Silver and Black haven’t missed a step in camp due to Averett.

Earlier, I mentioned Averett and Adams have been battling it out frequently during camp, and the former Raven has taken full advantage of working with an All-Pro wideout.

“[Adams is] always a perfectionist and definitely professional”, Averett said when explaining why he’s trying to soak up as much from Adams as he can.

"“I kind of try to get his little secrets and see what’s the things he looks at from me, as far as releases and things like that. I’m learning a lot from him.”"

A big reason Averett has embraced the challenge of guarding Adams through camp is due to Adams’ stature in the league. The 27-year-old corner feels if he can compete against Adams, he can challenge any receiver throughout the league.

The smothering coverage Averette has presented to Adams through camp only makes sense. In 2021, the new Raiders’ cornerback ranked 10th on Pro Football Focus’ list of top-10 cornerbacks in press during the ’21 season.

Through the first month of football, no cornerback allowed a lower passing rating than Averett in ’21, logging an unreal 41.7 opposing quarterback rating. The Alabama alum hopes to continue his success with the Raiders in 2022, and if camp holds any indications, it looks like things might continue trending upwards for Averett.
