Raiders 2022 Training Camp: One question for each unit on offense

Quarterbacks: Who will enter the season as QB2?

Derek Carr will be the starting quarterback for the Raiders in 2022. That’s obvious. What’s not so obvious is who will back him up heading into the season: Nick Mullens, or Jarrett Stidham?

Looking at the numbers, Mullen is superior in every way. His 25:22 touchdown interception ratio is far better than the 2:4 ratio from Stidham, his 64.6 career completion percentage is well above Stidham’s 50%, and the 4.5k total passing yards difference is quite immense.

Sometimes football is about more than numbers, though. It’s also about relationships and understanding. Fortunately for Stidham, he not only has a great relationship with head coach Josh McDaniels but understands the system McDaniels runs – Both of which are reasons Las Vegas ultimately traded for the former Patriots quarterback.

Stidham has taken full advantage of this, with some sources going as far as claiming QB2 is his job to lose. On Saturday, the former Patriot was noted for having a great touchdown throw to Moreau; One of many great plays from Stidham throughout camp.

The Raiders remain unsure which quarterback will start against Jacksonville on August 4th, but preseason will likely be the deciding factor in which of these two become Carr’s immediate backup. Of course, the hope is that neither have to come in and finish a game. Still, it’s important to know someone will be ready to do so, should they have to.

Chase Garbers remains on the roster, but the job will go to Mullens or Stidham. We’ll see which of the two earns the job.
