Who backs up Derek Carr?

Unfortunately, we are unlikely to see starting quarterback Derek Carr in this game. With three more pre-season games and the entirety of the off-season program left, there is plenty of time for him to get his reps. Instead, fans should get a good look into the battle for who gets to be his back-up.

Perhaps most likely to secure the job is former Patriots draft pick, Jarrett Stidham. At one point, some around the New England organization thought that he was the heir apparent to Tom Brady. Of course, this was not meant to be but it is clear that both McDaniels and Ziegler believe in his talent.

Newly added veteran Nick Mullens will also present stiff competition as a guy who was a starter at several different points in his career. Fans of the Raiders will remember him as the guy who filled in for Baker Mayfield last year when Las Vegas faced the Browns late in the season. Mullens also made his NFL debut against the Raiders while with the 49ers.

Lastly, undrafted rookie Chase Garbers will get a chance to prove himself this off-season. After a quality final season at the University of California, he didn’t quite have the tools to be drafted in April. Still, he will look to make the decision at backup quarterback much tougher over the rest of the off-season.
