DJ Turner

Turner’s situation is very similar to Sam Webb’s, although his chances to make the final roster are notably higher.

Like Webb, Turner is the 6th man at his position, currently being the WR6. Also like Webb, there’s good reason to believe the Raiders won’t mind carrying six players at his position if he continues impressing like he has been. The big difference between the two – is it feels like Las Vegas is already content on carrying six receivers, while Webb has to persuade the Raiders to do so through his play.

Turner has been one of the most pleasant surprises through both camp and preseason. The Raiders have so much faith in the backend of their receiver depth, being Turner and T-Billy, that the team wasted no time in releasing veteran Demarcus Robinson during the initial roster trimming to 85 players.

Not only is Turner’s 35-yard touchdown the longest touchdown for Las Vegas during the preseason, but the punt he returned for 26 yards against Minnesota is the longest return by the Raiders. There’s a lot to like from the 25-year-old, especially his playmaking ability. When the very last receiver on your depth chart can create for himself, nothing but good things can happen.

As is, Turner may make the roster for his return ability alone. Hunter Renfrow is currently listed as the Raiders’ punt returner, but it’s hard to imagine the Silver and Black don’t protect their $32 million investment. Turner is currently one-of-three players listed as a punt return option for the team, and if he beats out Darius Phillips on special teams, it may even benefit Sam Webb.
