How the Las Vegas Raiders can return to the playoffs in 2022

Improve the Red Zone offense

To put it lightly, the Raiders struggled in the redzone under Jon Gruden. During Gruden’s second tenure from 2018-2021, the Raiders offense had its best redzone production in year one (2018), boasting a 53.49% TD percentage. That was good for 22nd in the league. From then on, it only got worse.

Last season, Las Vegas fell to 29th in the league, with just a 49.23% TD percentage in the redzone. Somehow, the Raiders still reached the playoffs at 10-7. Even still, it is hard to imagine last season coming down to a SNF winner-is-in matchup if more success was found in the redzone throughout the year.

This season, the Raiders must find a way to take advantage of their trips to the redzone. And with the addition of Davante Adams and (hopefully) a healthy Darren Waller, there will be no excuses not to do so.

The good news is, the players seem to think a large improvement in this area is imminent, as Waller explained on Barstool Sports’ “Bussin with the Boys” podcast, “There was a lot of times in the last couple years where I felt like there wasn’t a clear defined attack in the red zone. . .Now I kind of feel like that’s something that’s in place with Josh [McDaniels].”

If Waller is correct in his sentiment, Las Vegas will score a lot more points this season…and win more games.  Correcting the issues that have plagued the Silver and Black in the redzone is the most important aspect to ensuring this high-powered offense lives up to it’s potential.
