Pressure Up the Middle
One of the biggest surprises going into this season was seeing Andrew Billings penciled in ahead of Johnathan Hankins as one of their starting defensive tackles. Between Billings and fellow started Bilal Nichols, we’ve seen decent play from the big guys up the middle.
In the Titans first game against the Giants, one of the things I noticed when watching it back was that the Giants were pretty successful in applying good pressure up the middle. Ryan Tannehill on many occasions was forced to either flee the pocket or get the ball out quickly because one of his interior linemen were getting pushed back into his face.
There is no denying that the majority of the Raiders success with their pass rush has been from Maxx Crosby and the pressure Patrick Graham brings from the outside. With star tackle Taylor Lewan in question for Sunday’s game, we may very well see the stat sheet numbers come from the tandem on the edges. But if the big men in the middle can get going early with stout run defense and the ability to get in Tannehill’s face, it will open up all kinds of success for everyone across that front five.
