Raiders vs Chargers 2022 Week 13: Studs and Duds

No One – Duds

There were a few potential candidates for duds this week as the Raiders had some miscues early on. First, it was Josh Jacobs losing a fumble, Derek Carr throwing an ill-advised pass into coverage that was returned for a pick-six, and then Andre James snapping one over Carr’s head. Then it was Daniel Carlson missing a field goal at the end of the second quarter and ended with Amik Robertson getting mossed by Keenan Allen.

Robertson was perhaps the most deserving player candidate of the dud label as he gave up the touchdown to Allen on fourth and 12 but the young DB had good coverage and lost due to the overwhelming physical advantage that Allen had. Perhaps if Nate Hobbs was fully healthy, he would’ve been matched up on the Chargers’ top receiver, but Robertson drew the assignment and kept Allen quiet for most of the until that moment.

Josh McDaniels would have been a clear candidate had the Raiders lost the game as he made another curious decision in the fourth quarter. The decision came as the Raiders were in the midst of a 12-play drive that brought them all the way down to the LA 6-yard line thanks to some strong running from Jacobs and rookie Zamir White. Facing 3rd and one from the LA six, McDaniels called a pass play and then kicked the field goal when that pass fell incomplete after a great play by the Chargers DB.

This was a chance for the Raiders to go up by 3 scores if they scored a touchdown and instead of being aggressive, he settled for the points. Ultimately it didn’t matter as the Chargers fell short, but he could have ended the game as a contest with a more aggressive decision. We’re still not sold on McDaniels as the long-term answer in Las Vegas and his in-game decisions have been inconsistent, but he deserves credit for this turnaround in the Raiders season.
