Raiders 7-round 2023 NFL Mock Draft: Defense gets an influx of talent

8. player. 874. . EDGE. Red Raiders . Tyree Wilson

Chandler Jones has been playing much better the last two weeks but given his age and general inconsistency we know he is not the long-term answer. The dream pick for the Raiders would be Jalen Carter, but it is unlikely he lasts this long unless there is a run at QBs in the top 7 so we will have to settle for Tyree Wilson from Texas Tech.

Wilson is a bigger defensive end at 6-6, 275 pounds, and is a player that several other Just Blog Baby writers have mocked to the Raiders at different points this season. He started his career with Texas A&M but transferred to Texas Tech and has become an excellent player for the Red Raiders.

Scouts note that he is ready from a physical perspective for the NFL because of his strong build and has the flexibility and athleticism to rush the passer well at the pro level. His 14 sacks in the last two years hint at that as well as his 27.5 tackles for loss.

He is praised for his great pass rushing instincts and good lateral quickness which should help in pursuit as well.

The potential concerns around Wilson are around his perceived lack of explosiveness and peak athleticism. His last recorded 40 time was 4.8 which is below average for an elite edge defender but he can improve on that leading up to the draft. Wilson would be a great immediate fit as a rotational pass rusher and defensive end as the Raiders prepare to move on after the 2023 season from Chandler Jones.
