Raiders: Which 2023 NFL Draft QB is best to come in and replace Derek Carr?

Is it the very popular Anthony Richardson who’s rising through the ranks? Unfortunately, I don’t believe so.

Very similar reasons as Will Levis. Anthony Richardson is a super raw talent; maybe even a little more raw than Levis; maybe even with a higher ceiling. But he needs coaching. He needs that offensive guru like Steichen, Reich, or Daboll who can put him in the best situation possible for him to succeed……..if he or Levis even can at the professional level.

I do not believe the Raiders to be that kind of situation for such a raw quarterback talent with how run-centric they have become and with how many mistakes were made at the coaching/management level in 2022.

For some reference, here are some stat lines for two prominent Josh McDaniels quarterbacks not named Tom Brady…..

2022 Derek Carr:

Worst passer rating since his rookie year (86.3)
Worst completion percentage since his rookie year (60.8%)
3rd fewest passing yards in his career (3,522)
Highest interception rate of his career (2.8%)

2011 Sam Bradford (1 year removed from a RoY campaign):

1-9 record as the Rams starter
Lowest completion percentage of his career (53.5%)
Worst touchdown percentage of his career (1.7%)
Worst passer rating of his career as a starter of at least 4 games (70.5)
Fewest passing yards per game of his career as a starter of at least 4 games (216.4)
Worst QBR of his career as a starter of at least 4 games (31.4)

Both QBs were coming off major successes: Bradford as the reigning Rookie of the Year and Carr willing the Raiders to the playoffs after a career-high year in passing yards (4,804) and a top three career performance in completion percentage (68.4).

In Denver, Kyle Orton had two of the better seasons of his career, but he still finished 11-17 across 2009-10.

Outside of the greatest to ever do it, quarterbacks haven’t exactly had a lot of success under McDaniels, I’m sorry to say. If you’re a young quarterback that needs a coach to elevate you, I don’t feel confident Vegas is your optimal destination.
