Is it Will Levis? I don’t believe so.
All I’ve heard since this kid was brought into the spotlight is how bad he is, and I have to say that whenever so many people say and believe a certain thing so passionately, it’s usually wrong.
As someone who likes to go against the grain, I’m very tempted to say Will Levis is my favorite prospect of this year’s quarterback group. But I also have to recognize what he needs as an NFL quarterback and what teams would suit him the best.
I’ve watched a decent amount of him this year at Kentucky- not as much as I’m sure many others have. But my read on him is that he fits into that Josh Allen mold of being hyper talented in both the passing and run department. He’s got an absolute cannon and his big body/powerful running style could vault him into being the best quarterback from this draft class in short time.
He’s got all these tools he can use as a raw talent. He just needs a coach who’s going to be able to unlock them.
Josh Allen had Brian Daboll.
Patrick Mahomes had Andy Reid.
Jalen Hurts had Shane Steichen.
Trevor Lawrence just got Doug Pederson and crushed it this year.
Unfortunately, I cannot say I believe Josh McDaniels would have a similar effect on Will Levis.
He is a kid that needs a sure-fire polished coach who’s going to be his rock when times get tough, and a coach who blew a 20-0 lead, two 17-0 leads, and a 16-3 lead along with numerous 10-point leads this season doesn’t strike me as someone who fits that mold.
Will Levis needs a Frank Reich (Carolina), Shane Steichen (now in Indy), or even a Brian Daboll (if the Giants are looking) to unlock his potential. I don’t think McDaniels can do that for him.
