Winning something like a starting cornerback battle doesn't quite carry the same weight as, say, the starting quarterback competition. Even if a player is deemed the starter, it's likely that there will still be somewhat of a rotation at the position, even if the first-teamer will eat up the bulk of the snaps.
So, while second-year player Darien Porter and Day 3 rookie Zeke Masses have been duking it out for the starting gig on opening day opposite Eric Stokes, at least early in the year, Rob Leonard should have a heavy rotation on the boundary. Someone still has to trot out there with the 1s, though.
Based on what occurred during the preseason finale, that player seems to be Porter. While it is probably a good thing that the sophomore third-rounder beat out the first-year fifth-rounder, Raider Nation should know that Porter may just be the first-team cornerback for the time being.
The battle should rage on into the 2026 NFL season.
Darien Porter seems to have won CB2 battle, but Zeke Masses won't go away quietly
Against the San Francisco 49ers last Thursday, Porter played just eight defensive snaps. That may sound like a bad thing, but in an exhibition game, the fewer snaps a starting-level guy plays, the better it is for them. Effectively, the team has seen enough from them and wants to insulate them.
So, when Porter goes out there for just eight snaps and plays all of them with the likes of Stokes, Kwity Paye, Adam Butler, Jeremy Chinn, Quay Walker, Nakobe Dean and the rest of the starters, that is your sign, right there, that this coaching staff views him as the starter.
But after a rough preseason opener, Masses bounced back in a major way against the Houston Texans last week, and he continued that high level of play against the 49ers last Thursday. But he played 20 defensive snaps, which is the team basically saying that they need to see more of him.
And what they saw should work in his favor. Masses came up and made two tackles in the run game, including a solo stop, and he wasn't even targeted in nine coverage snaps. The rookie played well across the board for the second straight game, so he's back to trending in the right direction.
Following the first preseason game, Porter seemed to be pulling ahead. And things stayed that way for the rest of the exhibition slate, with things culminating in Porter getting starter treatment the last time out. That's as clear a sign as we're going to get from Kubiak.
Masses should still play a role in this secondary, and for a young team in the early stages of a rebuild, the competition will go on. It cannot be ruled out that Masses, or even Jermod McCoy, could dethrone Porter at some point this season. The margins were razor-thin in this battle.
When the team takes the field against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1, though, expect to see Porter out there. But don't make any long-term assumptions about the spot.
