It is quite easy to play motivated football and be both confident and fearless when you're undefeated. And the Las Vegas Raiders were surely feeling on top of the world after their 3-0 start to the 2026 NFL season, but a narrow loss to the Kansas City Chiefs has changed the equation.

How a young Raiders team, led by a young coaching staff, responds to this bit of adversity will say a lot about them.

For what it's worth, Klint Kubiak and Co. seem to have the right mindset, and they have all year. The focus is on the process and what each member of the organization can do every day to get better, win or lose, and the results will sort themselves out.

But that approach will be tested when the Raiders take the field on Sunday in Week 5 against the New England Patriots. Not only is this the first game for the Silver and Black coming off a loss, but it will be in a hostile environment on the road and in unsavory conditions for multiple reasons.

Young Raiders team must bounce back against Patriots

This may sound crazy because winning is all that ultimately matters in the NFL, and there are no moral victories in this league, but for a young team like the Raiders, the response is more important than the result on Sunday.

Good and mature teams bounce back from their shortcomings and make corrections, and teams that are hard to believe in or aren't quite there yet mentally let things spiral downward. With so many new and inexperienced pieces, it is unknown what the Silver and Black will be. Hopefully, the former.

And again, even if the scoreboard doesn't reflect improvement, what matters most is what shows up on tape. How does this team play? Are they still playing fast and not second-guessing, or do they immediately start hesitating and questioning what they're seeing and feeling after one setback?

That will reflect on the coaching staff as well. Oftentimes, a young coach will completely abandon what got them there after facing the slightest adversity, and they'll start making rampant changes. They'll let the team know, as a result, that they don't trust themselves or the roster.

Essentially, Kubiak can't panic. Rob Leonard can't panic. They can adjust, of course, and they should. But making drastic personnel changes or completely flipping the approach after one loss would undo a lot of the positive feelings that Raider Nation has experienced in the early going.

Character really matters in the NFL, and Las Vegas' braintrust stressed all offseason and throughout the year that they have players in the locker room who care about football. Who care about each other. Who are willing to do the work. Sunday will be the true test of that.

Las Vegas has a tall task playing in New England

Let's look at some of the logistical challenges that the Raiders will be facing on Sunday as well.

Road games are never easy, especially not for a West Coast team playing up in New England. Traveling across several time zones and having to face the defending AFC champions, who are fresh off a win against the previously unbeaten Buffalo Bills, is another challenge in and of itself.

Plus, this is Las Vegas' second trip to the East Coast in the last three weeks, as they played against the New Orleans Saints at the Superdome in Week 3. And it is their third road game in four weeks, as they also played at SoFi Stadium in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Not to mention, rain is in the forecast for Sunday's contest, the first contest that the Raiders will play all year outdoors. Oh, and this is the first early kickoff that Las Vegas will have, so they are facing a myriad of "firsts." How prepared they are will speak to their preparation, both players and coaches.

Ideally, Kubiak has his team ready to go, and in an even more ideal world, he doesn't need to get them ready. They're just ready on their own. And if the Raiders don't come out on top, fine. This is still a young team that is in the early stages of a rebuild and has overachieved so far.

But not being ready for the task at hand is not acceptable. Something tells me that the Silver and Black will be equipped to take down this Patriots team on Sunday, and even if they don't, the product on the field will matter a lot. It did last week against the Chiefs, and it will again in New England.
