The Las Vegas Raiders rewarded tight end Michael Mayer with a three-year, $45 million extension on Saturday, which happened just a few days after the team decided to clear up $8.26 million in cap space by restructuring Quay Walker's and Jalen Nailor's contracts.
According to Over the Cap, the Raiders still have $11.3 million in cap space in 2026 and are projected to have $67.4 million for next year. John Spytek may consider another housekeeping item on the team's to-do list if another player in a contract year starts the season on a strong note.
That player is wide receiver Tre Tucker.
Tre Tucker's recent strides could spur contract discussions with Raiders
Entering the final year of his rookie deal, Tre Tucker is in a position to boost his 2027 free-agent market value. He's the Raiders' No. 1 wideout for the 2026 NFL season, and he could pace for 1,000-plus receiving yards in that role, even if he didn't get off to a hot start in Week 1.
With All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers on the mend, Tucker still has a shot at being the team leader in multiple receiving categories, even if Mayer and Ashton Jeanty are heavily involved in the pass game. He's seen a steady increase in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns every year in the league.
Head coach Klint Kubiak called Tucker a "quiet leader" during organized team activities (OTAs), as reported by ESPN's Ryan McFadden.
Tucker has embraced another layer of responsibility within his position group.
"I was very fortunate to have some great guys in my room when I was a rookie, which helped me grow as a person and as a player. So that's my whole thing with those guys, is how can I make them better, and how can I help them in any way possible?"
Often, teams sign productive players to an early extension even if they haven't peaked, rather than enter a bidding competition for them on the open market. Fans just saw that happen, as the Raiders likely contemplated that, along with Bowers' injuries, before giving Mayer his new deal.
Tucker has been far more productive at his position than Mayer has at his, coming out of the same 2023 draft class. Given the leadership aspect as well, Tucker could be a valuable part of the Raiders' future, assuming the team adds young wideouts in the next year.
According to Spotrac, Tucker's 2027 free-agent market value is projected at $13.7 million per year. That means a roughly three-year, $41 million contract could be in the cards. But if Tucker comes close to or tops 1,000 receiving yards, that price will certainly increase as the season goes on.
Given the state of the receiver room, Spytek can take a proactive approach to Tucker's contract situation and keep him on the books at a team-friendly rate while adding a true No. 1 talent beside him.
