The Oakland Raiders defense haven’t been overmatched in many games this season despite their difficult schedule, with the Wembley loss to the Miami Dolphins and the second half against the Denver Broncos serving as the rare instances in which the Oakland defense had no answer for their opponents.
However from kickoff to the final whistle on Sunday the St. Louis Rams got whatever they wanted as head coach Jeff Fisher’s gameplan of screen passes and plenty of rookie running back Tre Mason allowed for a blowout at the Edward Jones Dome. In fact the 52-0 final score was the worst Raiders defeat of the modern era. After shutting down Alex Smith and the Chiefs last week, it is easy to say that the Raiders were manhandled by the Rams offense often on Sunday.
Following the game the Raiders defensive players noted that the Rams gameplan of attacking the edges was a big factor in the blowout, feeling completely beaten by their opponents after a blowout loss.
All defenses have bad days, but the Raiders performance in stopping career journeyman quarterback Shaun Hill and the Rams offense was beyond awful. A good gameplan as well as a poor effort allowing the Rams to look incredibly good against the Raiders. Facing Jim Harbaugh and the Niners on Sunday at home, the Raiders defense better hope that San Francisco’s offense doesn’t replicate the Rams gameplan or they could be in big trouble after a blueprint for beating the 1-11 Raiders was laid out for future opponents on Sunday.
