Oakland Raiders: 5 reasons not to panic after Washington loss
By John Buhler
Kirk Cousins is one of the most accurate quarterbacks in football
Yes, the Oakland secondary needs to go back to the drawing board after this game. However, you have to give credit to the magnificent performance of Cousins for the Redskins. He was in complete command of the Washington offense. Even if he doesn’t re-up with them in free agency next year, he is a franchise quarterback a lot of teams would love to have.
What makes Cousins such a difficult quarterback to defend is he is incredibly accurate and plays with great pace. He uses tempo to his advantage and can lean on the running game to open up more passing lanes.
This is a guy that can complete close to 70 percent of his passes this season. In his two-plus years as a starter, Cousins has shown to be one of the most reliable passers in football. He is very much a rhythm player. When his team gets off to a hot start, he can elevate his team to put up points on anybody. To beat Cousins, you have to get him off-schedule early. Otherwise, a Week 3 performance versus Oakland is what happens.
Let’s be real. Oakland isn’t going to go up against many passers that will be a methodical as Cousins this season. Yes, Alex Smith twice won’t be easy, as he is Mr. Efficiency. We’ve also got Tom Brady on the slate…However, you have to admit Cousins made some throws that were impossible to defend. That was a great performance by him and hopefully it lights a fire in Carr for Week 4 versus Denver.
