Free Agency: Who’s New

Tyrell Williams, WR

The Raiders brought in more help outside of Antonio Brown via free agency, agreeing with former Los Angeles Chargers wideout Tyrell Williams. For Oakland, Williams gives the team that deep threat they were missing last season, and he should be a dominant No. 2 wideout in this offense.

Jose’s Grade

Trent Brown, OT

Oakland needed to bolster their offensive line, and they decided to bring in the best offensive tackle available in free agency. Trent Brown is fresh off winning a Super Bowl as the punishing left tackle for the New England Patriots, and will slide into the starting lineup opposite second-year tackle Kolton Miller.

Jose’s Grade

Lamarcus Joyner, FS

The Oakland Raiders needed more help in the secondary, even after bringing back Erik Harris in free agency earlier in March. Lamarcus Joyner was one of the elite safeties available this year, and while he originally wanted to go back East to play, having the ability to play for Jon Gruden made him do a 180.

Jose’s Grade

Josh Mauro, Edge

The Oakland Raiders certainly need to bring in help on the edge, especially after finishing the year with only 13 sacks as a team in 2019. While not the biggest name, Josh Mauro was the first new edge to join the team, and it will be interesting to see what kind of player he is wearing the Silver and Black.

Jose’s Grade

Vontaze Burfict, LB

The Silver and Black added to their linebacker group on March 19, bringing in former Cincinnati Bengals star Vontaze Burfict to the fold on a one-year deal. Burfict played for Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther with the Bengals, and you have to believe that Guenther wanted one of his guys on the roster in 2019.

Jose’s Grade

Nevin Lawson, CB

The Raiders needed to add depth at the cornerback position this offseason, and while Nevin Lawson was not a splashy signing, he is a veteran player who brings starting experience to the group. In fact, Lawson has started all but three of the Detroit Lions games over the last three seasons, though he has yet to nab an interception.

Brad’s Grade

Jordan Devey, OL

Oakland lost Kelechi Osemele and Jon Feliciano in the interior of their offensive line this offseason, so it was a must that they added some bodies for training camp. Jordan Devey comes to the team after spending the last three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he started two games at center during the 2018 NFL season.

Brad’s Grade

Curtis Riley, S

The Raiders plan on using Lamarcus Joyner as a slot corner next season, so it made sense that they would bring in another safety via free agency. That player was Curtis Riley, who started 16 games for the New York Giants last season, and is a former teammate of Derek Carr at Fresno State.

Brad’s Grade

Mike Glennon, QB

Oakland added a quarterback to battle for the backup job to Derek Carr on March 21, bringing Mike Glennon in the fold. Glennon comes to the Raiders via the Arizona Cardinals, where he appeared in two games last season. With this move, Nathan Peterman moves to No. 3 on the depth chart.

Brad’s Grade

Landry Jones, QB

Five days after signing Mike Glennon, and adding him to the quarterback room, Oakland added another arm, bringing in former Pittsburgh Steelers backup Landry Jones. Jones will now battle it out with Glennon, and Nathan Peterman for the backup role behind Derek Carr this summer.

Brad’s Grade

Isaiah Crowell, RB

The Oakland Raiders added to their running back group on March 28, bringing in former New York Jets back Isaiah Crowell. This was a solid addition to the roster, as he has the kind of skill set Jon Gruden loves from his backs, and with the signing, the picture at the position becomes less cloudy.

Jose’s Grade

Brandon Marshall, LB

The Raiders brought in some more help at the linebacker position on March 28, agreeing with Brandon Marshall on a one-year deal. Marshall not only brings leadership to the group, but he comes into Oakland very hungry, after a down season, and the potential to latch on with the organization as they make their move to Las Vegas (his hometown) next season.

Jose’s Grade

Ryan Grant, WR

The Raiders added to their wide receiver group on April 3, signing former Indianapolis Colts wideout Ryan Grant. Grant joins the team as the fourth new member of this wide receiver position group, and should battle for a roster spot this offseason.
