Oakland Raiders: 4 positions of need in the 2019 NFL Draft
Safety
With the Raiders choosing to use Lamarcus Joyner as mainly a nickel corner, there is still a hole at the other safety spot opposite Karl Joseph. Erik Harris is a solid player, but I don’t think you can go into the season with him as your other starter.
This draft has plenty of capable safety prospects, but it would be ideal to find one that complements the skill set of Joseph or is very versatile. Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is the first player that comes to mind as he did a little bit off everything at Florida and excels at 2-deep zone and single high. He also played in the slot so he Joyner could switch roles if the gameplay would deem it necessary. Then there’s Nasir Adderly who Jon Gruden and his staff got a good look at during senior bowl week. He best as a deep safety and is someone who could complement Joseph very well.
These two prospects are also big-time playmakers which is something Oakland desperately needs.
With the Raiders not having a third-round pick as of now, they may be hard pressed to find a capable starting level safety if they don’t use one of their 4 top 35 picks. I also wouldn’t mind if they looked to add another top corner in the draft, but they seem content with what they currently have there.
