2020 NFL 7-round mock draft: Raiders bolster edge, WR in 1st round
Derek Carr has put together a solid 2019 campaign, but Jon Gruden is obsessed with quarterbacks and the Raiders could use a backup with high upside potential. While it appears Gruden has been happy with Carr’s play this season, drafting a quarterback in the later rounds can never hurt. Guys like Dak Prescott and Gardner Minshew are two examples of quarterbacks drafted in the later rounds who’ve exceeded all expectations.
Cole McDonald looks the part — passing the eye test with a 6’4″ 220 pound frame. He doesn’t back down when letting it rip downfield, challenging any coverage. McDonald isn’t afraid to use his legs when nothing develops, making him a good candidate of succeeding in off-script situations.
This season, McDonald leads the Mountain West Conference in passing completions (205), passing yards (2,521), total yards (2,861) and touchdowns (24).
Pros:
- Live arm
- Ideal size for quarterback
- Good feel inside the pocket
Cons:
- Accuracy concerns
- Inconsistent release
- Long throwing motion
