Las Vegas Raiders may benefit from Patrick Mahomes deal

What the Mahomes extension means in the immediate future

To put it simply, nothing has really changed for the 2020 season when Mahomes put pen to paper on his new contract. The extension does not kick in until the 2021 season, and Mahomes will account for $5.3 million against the cap with just a $800k salary.

The Chiefs already had very little cap space coming in to the offseason after signing several free agents to one-year deals and franchising defensive tackle Chris Jones to the tune of $16 million in 2020.

They are also paying over $10 million for the services of Tyrann Mathieu and Frank Clark around $8 million for Travis Kelce, Eric Fisher, and Anthony Hitchens.  With the relatively minuscule amount of money that Mahomes has been making the Chiefs have been able to pay handsomely for the services of some excellent defensive players to complement their explosive offense.

The rookie deal Mahomes has been playing under has enabled the Chiefs, and many other teams in similar situations, to fill out the rest of their roster with talented players looking for big paydays.

Once this extension kicks in that may not be so straightforward.
