Las Vegas Raiders: 3 possible surprise cut candidates after training camp

WR Nelson Agholor

The injury to Tyrell Williams may have made the decision to keep Nelson Agholor easier for the Raiders, but there are still eight other receivers on the roster for what will likely be five spots. Three are already spoken for, with the rookie duo of Bryan Edwards and Henry Ruggs III and Hunter Renfrow, leaving two spots for Agholor, Zay Jones, Rico Gafford, Marcell Ateman, Keelan Doss, and De’Mornay Pierson-El to fight over.

The obvious choice is to keep Agholor and Jones as the most talented and experienced members of the group, but both have had their inconsistencies, especially Agholor and his well-documented troubles catching the ball at times.  Agholor has a special bond with Gruden from his days as a high school kid in Tampa, but if the Raiders want their fifth receiver to contribute on special teams, they may look to keep the speedy Gafford instead.

Gafford was a cornerback in college, and is one of the fastest players in the NFL, running between a 4.19 and 4.26 at his pro day, so he could be weapon as a return man or gunner on special teams. The former Wyoming standout is most likely a practice squad candidate but we could be in for a surprise if the Raiders choose to keep him and move on from Agholor after just a few months.
