Las Vegas Raiders 2020 recap: 4 things we learned in September

Johnathan Abram tracked as the 3rd fastest player in NFL

You may have missed in during the Monday Night Football broadcast. But while the announcers were gawking at Abram’s closing speed, a graphic popped up that said Abram was tracked at hitting over 22mph during Week 1, good for 3rd fastest in the NFL, per NFL Next Gen Stats. Not only is Abram a thumper, but he can certainly move.

Next Gen Stats only publishes ball carrier speeds on their website, and only one player (SF running back Raheem Mostert) has eclipsed 22mph with the ball in his hands. Abram’s open field tackling was atrocious last Sunday, and of course he’s literally playing with a broken shoulder and sprained AC joint, which might explain his poor approach in the open field.

But if he figures that out, it looks like there won’t be many players who the explosive safety won’t be able to walk down this year. Let’s hope we won’t have to see much of that, but in terms of what the Raiders have in Abram going forward, it looks like they got a good one in the first round last year.
