Analyzing the Raiders Running Back situation entering the 2022 offseason

Jalen Richard, Peyton Barber, and Trey Ragas

Jalen Richard’s contract voids after being paid over $3 million to do very little this season. Richard is still a good player but his role diminished prominently behind Drake. However, Richard’s saving grace could be Josh McDaniels.

McDaniels’ offense has always had a traditional third-down back in the mold of James White or Kevin Faulk. Richard is still a tremendous receiving back and pass blocker and is a top third-down back in the NFL. McDaniels would be wise to have him return, also let us not forget about his 3rd and 22 run in the season finale.

Peyton Barber was picked up after Richard was injured in training camp and got some solid run. Barber is a veteran who offers good depth but little explosiveness. In the two games he started in Jacob’s absence he played well and sparked the running game, but there was a reason he was available. Barber is likely headed for free agency.

Trey Ragas played in a few games after being an undrafted rookie and showed some promise. The team clearly thinks he has a future and could provide depth.
