Raiders QB Derek Carr didn’t want history repeating itself
Whether Carr’s previous extension had any effect on Khalil Mack’s departure is debatable. Be that as it may, the Raiders’ quarterback didn’t want a similar scenario playing out again and opted for a team-friendly contract.
"“I went through a heartbreak already last time I signed my contract, my best friend left, and I didn’t want that to ever happen again. And so, this was an opportunity for me to prove to the team, to the organization, to our fans that the way we’re going to structure this is so that we can keep everybody together and really, really have real continuity, really have something to build on.”"
Keeping the Raiders intact, more specifically the offensive core is likely one of the team’s top priorities, and the first domino to fall is Carr’s extension. Several key contributors, including Hunter Renfrow, Josh Jacobs, and Darren Waller, will surely want long-term commitments from the Silver and Black, and as Carr pointed out, he wanted to ensure that his teammates could at least have the opportunity to negotiate and possibly get themselves a new contract.
Keeping this unit together will likely be on everyone’s minds for the near future as the Raiders will begin to accumulate more cap space once June 2nd arrives and they feel the effects of post-June 1st cuts.
